Desktop Tracer is designed for desktop and laptop use where you have a separate camera pointing down at your paper. On mobile, the camera faces you (selfie) or away from you — neither is suitable for overhead tracing. The best option if you don't have a webcam: mount your phone overhead using a small tripod or flexible arm, then pair it wirelessly with Desktop Tracer by scanning a QR code on screen. No app to install on the phone. Phone-as-camera is free on every plan.

Is tracing cheating?

No. Tracing is a layout tool, like a ruler, grid, stencil, or transfer paper. It helps you place the structure so you can spend more energy on the part only you can do: the line quality, color, texture, shading, surface, and finish. If it helps you make more work and stay in the flow, it's doing its job.

Start with whatever camera you already have: a laptop webcam, USB webcam, document camera, or phone. The best camera is the one you can place steadily above your work so your surface is clear and your reference is easy to see.

Can I use my iPhone as a camera?

Yes. If you're on a Mac running macOS Ventura or later, Apple's Continuity Camera lets your iPhone act as a wireless webcam with dramatically better image quality than any USB webcam. Mount your iPhone overhead using a flexible arm stand, then select it as your camera source in Desktop Tracer. On Windows, apps like DroidCam or Reincubate Camo work similarly.

Can I use a document camera or scanner?

Document cameras (like the IPEVO V4K) that present as a USB webcam work perfectly — they're purpose-built for overhead desk capture and have excellent image quality. Flatbed scanners don't work because they don't provide a live video feed, but they're great for scanning your finished artwork afterward.

Your camera may be too close, struggling with focus, or fighting uneven light. Raise it until the full work area is visible, add steady overhead lighting, and give autofocus a moment to settle. If your camera supports manual focus, locking it can make the image feel steadier.

Do I need any special lighting?

Soft, steady light helps a lot. Try to light the surface evenly from above or the side, and avoid harsh shadows across the area you're tracing. You don't need a studio setup — just enough light for the camera to see your work clearly.

Locking activates AR tracking. Once locked, the app tracks the physical corner markers on your canvas and keeps your reference overlay registered to them — so if you nudge the camera or your desk shifts slightly, the overlay adjusts automatically. You can unlock to reposition or resize the overlay at any time.

No. Your camera stream is processed entirely inside your browser using WebRTC and the HTML Canvas API. No video frames or pixel data are ever sent to our servers. We have zero access to what your camera sees. You can verify this by checking network traffic in your browser's developer tools — you'll see no video upload.

If you're logged in, your project settings and uploaded reference images are stored in your account on our servers. If you're not logged in, project data is kept in your browser's local storage and will be lost if you clear your browser data. We never store your video feed.

Check the basics first: steady camera, even lighting, and a surface the camera can see clearly. Glossy or low-contrast surfaces can be harder to track, so matte paper or a little more light often helps.

Close other browser tabs and applications to free up CPU resources. Desktop Tracer runs all image processing locally, so a faster machine helps. Lowering your camera's resolution in the camera settings can also help on slower hardware. Chrome typically performs better than other browsers for this workload.

My reference image looks blurry or pixelated in the overlay.

This is usually caused by using a low-resolution source image. Use the highest-resolution version you have — for photographs, export from your photo library at full size. The app doesn't upscale images, so what you upload is what you see.
